Formerly a top fashion model at 5'10'' tall, Carey was popular with the top American designers, including Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Her father, who was a renowned scientist who received the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists' 1979 Scientist of the Year prize, is an accomplished scientist. The father of Carey was a geologist who traveled around the world as part of his profession. After she graduated from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, she started modeling on the side. The idea caught the attention of an agent from Ford Model Agency New York. The year was 1980 when she emigrated to France for a brief period of time, and lived in Paris as well as Bordeaux and then returned back to New York in order to continue an acting career. The model was featured on Vogue as well as Glamour pages. She attended full-time classes in New York University, obtaining the degree in Literature, which she earned while working on modeling assignments. When she began studying acting in the Neighborhood Playhouse, New York, her enthusiasm for acting grew. Her part was a minor one in Club Paradise with Robin Williams in 1986. She spends her free time ski, white-water rafting wind-surfing and climbing rocks.
